How do vampires come to being?
According to Slavic mythology there are numerous ways to become a vampire. Sometimes it is enough for an animal to jump over a corpse in order for that corpse to become a vampire. Suicide victims or those who died in water are likely to become vampires, children who weren’t born “properly”, as well as those who were “different” in their lifetime. If an evil man dies, his soul is banished to enter world of the dead, so it comes back and possesses it’s body. Even a living person can become a vampire by making a contract with evil forces. Also, sometimes vampires can have children with living women and these children are called vampirovići (in Serbian mythology). Before the late stage of Slavic pagan religion, Slavs were burning their dead - it was believed that non-burned corpse would become a vampire. That’s why after accepting Christianity Slavs were putting wooden thorns around graves, so that vampires couldn’t leave this circle.
